Annual Uniformed Bodies Camp 2013 Part I

4:02 PM

By The Name of Allah The Almighty and The Most Merciful

Sungai Congkak. That was the name of our uniformed bodies camping site this year. Situated in Hulu Langat, the journey took us around 1 hour and a half from PERMATA by bus. I've never heard of that place before so I was kinda marveled by the 'Congkak' part. Reminiscences of my childhood that was once filled with playing the traditional game ' congkak ' came to mind immediately.

This is the congkak I mentioned above. However, this post is not gonna be about this.

Perhaps I'll make another post about congkak later on xP

I wanted to bring minimal clothes but when the river part and cultural performance part came in, I decided to bring some extra clothes just in case I needed them. So I brought 5 t-shirts ( 1 collared ) , 3 track bottoms and 1 slacks. Torchlight? Well, that function is already integrated in my classic Nokia cell phone so it's not really an issue :P I didn't bring any books, laptop and else. I just wanted to get out of the school for a short period and have some 'real fun' with my friends throughout the camp :D

My friends and I arrived at the camp safely in the afternoon. We set the camps up and performed our Asar prayer quite late ( around 6 p.m if I was not mistaken ) Then, the best part came in - " You are allowed to have a bath in the river " , says the commander and all of the boys were like , " Really? Oh , yeah! " Everyone was excited and we immediately jumped straight into the river. It had been a long time since I last bathed in a river , so I was at the zenith of excitement. Actually, there had been some issues about 'kencing tikus' at the river some years ago but we were given assurance that the site is a quite well-known campsite and it had been a long time since there was a case of 'kencing tikus' reported so we don't really have another choice.

I finished earlier than my pals because I wanted to perform the Azan for our Maghrib prayer. ( In Islam, Azan is a call being done by a man which is often called as a 'bilal' to summon the muslims for our prayer ) There was no microphone nor a loud haler at the time so I had to performed it at the peak of my voice. Alhamdulillah ( All praises belong to Allah ) , everything went well and we performed our Solat Maghrib, followed by Solat Hajat and Solat Isya'. The dinner was kinda delicious and appetizing ( or maybe it was the fact that I was just too hungry? )

On the first night, the BSMM - Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia and the KEPO - Kadet Polis team were separated as we had our own distinctive activities. BSMM had a revision class about balutan and a brand new class about CPR. I was actually a total beginner in being a Malaysian Red Crescent member so I really had to focus during the class. I learnt so many things including the principle of DRCAB which is applied in the CPR. It was kinda funny when everyone especially the girls were on their verge of  ' geli ' when the breathing part of the CPR came in as one would have need to like stick his/her mouth to the victim's mouth to blow the air into the victim's lung. Everyone had some sorts of weird expressions on their face at that time ( well, I wasn't excluded from this ) but everything settled down right after the officer, Abang Hidayat said that , " In saving people's life, gender doesn't really matters especially in cases of emergency " And probably, that was the biggest lesson through out the class at that night.

The very next day, I woke up shivering -.-
Well, this is not me

My teeth were rattling and it was very cold. I didn't really expect that coming as the night was kinda hot
( plus, I ate a burger right before I slept so of course I would have felt hot ) I should had bring my sweater to the camp but unfortunately, I didn't. I also didn't got a sleeping bag. I guess Lady Luck was just not on my side. However, I still managed to survive somehow :D

At 7, we were supposed to have our morning exercise or ' senaman pagi ' , so I was expecting that it would be an aerobic session or something like that. Later, it turned out that we had to be in 3 lines and march towards our destination ( which we don't really knew in the first place ) Initially, the sergeant intended to make it a march or ' kawad ' by telling us to walk in-sync with one another with the boys saying ' kiri ' and the girls saying ' kanan ' . We had some trouble to keep up with the pace and to properly synchronize at first as the front part of the troop marched with a pace different to the back part. Therefore, we had to stop once in a while to get back in-sync. Nevertheless, we seemed to improve by every step that we take and finally, we were seen marching neatly with the pair of commands ' Kiri Kanan Kiri ' , ' Left Right Left ' , ' Hek Hok Hek ' and others harmoniously echoing in the village.

We're the happy kids - marching around the village :D

When we were only a few meters to the destination, the Sungai Congkak Waterfall, we were commanded to stop and run towards our goal, row by row. It was to teach us that we would need to speed up, not slowing down whenever we see our dreams are getting closer and I think that was somehow correct. When my turn came in, I ran quite fast and bested the other guys who were also in the same row as I was. I was the first to arrive but that is not something that I should be proud of as I felt that they didn't really tried their best.

Later came more class for BSMM members, followed by the Rescuing Operation or we called it as Operasi Menyelamat. Now, this is actually something that I've been waiting for as I'd only learnt the theories and all beforehand and this real simulation of a disaster would had served to be a great experience for me. The BSMM members were then divided into Unit Peninjau, Unit Penyelamat, Unit Rawatan Kecemasan and Unit Kebajikan. Then, the extra people were told to be the victims and the 'pengacau' which I can regard as the getting-in-the-way-of-the-rescuers people :P I was told to be in the Penyelamat Squad by Abang Hidayat himself as I had been in lead of the usage of stretcher to rescue a victim once. Right after the break, the victims team went off while the others stayed in the hall for more practical on 'carrying' or ' usungan '

BANG!!

Out of the blue, Rasyid barged in, panicking and reported that the some of the folks in the village had been hit by the ' kepala air ' ( which is a sudden large surge or outbreak of water that occurs at a river )
By the moment he came in, I knew that the time had came. Syahir and the Dalila who were the Operation Chief and the Operation Chief Assistant respectively recorded the report and distributed the tasks to each unit. Unit Peninjau went off first and followed by the the first half of the Unit Penyelamat right after 5 minutes.

After several minutes, they asked for some reinforcements from the Unit Penyelamat. My teammates and I were excited, thrilled and nervous at the same time. I was in the lead, running in front of my other friends. As I ran, I felt a rush of excitement pumped to every inches of my body and I realized that it was actually the desire to save people. Yes, saving and helping people is my passion.

When I arrived at the scene, most of the victims were already attended by my teammates from the first half of the squad. I searched for the other victims and later on I found Beng Lin who broke his right arm. I carried him carefully to the bilik gerakan while motivating him to stay strong and that everything will be fine soon. Right after that, I rushed back to the river and met Rasyid, who turned out to be somehow traumatized from the accident as he was the village chief. He alongside some other villagers were getting in the way of my teammates who were patiently treating the victims so I decided to bring him out of the scene. I carried him with all my might to the bilik gerakan while entertaining him with stuffs like

" Encik. Encik jangan risau. Kampung Encik akan selamat. Saya akan bawa Encik ke kampung baru yang lagi besar dan maju. Di sana, Encik boleh jadi ketua kampung baru. Saya dan rakan-rakan akan selamatkan penduduk di kampung Encik"

It was kinda funny when Rasyid said " Oh kuatnya encik " the moment when I lifted him and carried him all the way to the bilik gerakan xD

Last but not least, I went back and helped Reshi to carry Mak Whye Jin using the ' usungan dua tangan ' as his right foot was broken. Later, the whistle goes off and that marked the end of our operation. I believed that everyone was tired and exhausted. When I looked back at myself, I was sweating a lot that my t-shirt was wet. Even Nuraini said something like, " Perghh Bakhtiar "  It was no wonder that she said that as my skin was turning red and my body was boiling hot. Well, at least it was for the sake of saving the people and I don't really mind.

The facilitators commended on our work, saying that we were all good except that we were not that efficient yet, and there were still several aspects that we could really improve. They gave us a score of 75 out of 100 which resulted in an A- for us according to PERMATA's grading system. Awesome, I must say. This simulation of rescue operation stimulated the determination and passion in myself that it made me foresee the future of myself being involved in these kind of stuffs- lending a hand to people and saving their lives in times of crucial moments. InsyaAllah :)
